Non-Representational & Abstract Construction as Painting & Sculpture - 217018

This class will explore nontraditional processes for art making. We will spend 15 minutes at the beginning of each class looking at and discussing the context of pertinent artwork. Students will use paint, found objects, collage, assemblage, and other materials to create a series of works. Class content will be tailored to individual student's interests. Supply list could include old books, reclaimed barn wood, sheet metal, or more traditional supports such as canvas or wood panels and various paint mediums. Some artist examples include Robert Rauschenberg, Edward and Nancy Kienholz, and Jasper Johns.

Portrait Workshop - 217023

Have you wanted to venture into portraiture but weren't sure where to start? Paula McCarty, MFA will lead this workshop and help you understand what it takes to capture a likeness and mix skin tones. Students will learn to analyze the head as a series of planes, using simple shapes and color and progress to a more thorough investigation and varied palette. Emphasis will be placed on understanding facial structure, universal proportions, and the uniqueness of individual features. Self-portraits and working from manequins/photos will be included. A supply list of up to $100 will be printed at the time of registration (this cost is dependent upon what the artist currently has on hand).

Based on one of Roald Dahl's most poignantly quirky stories, James and the Giant Peach Jr is a brand new take on this "masterpeach" of a tale. Featuring a wickedly tuneful score and a witty and charming book, this adventurous musical about courage and self-discovery is destined to be a classic. Parents will be asked to help with their child's costumes and volunteer 10 hours per family to the program. Parent Meeting is Oct 2, 6-8pm at the Virginia Theatre. Auditions are Oct 5 and 6, 6-9pm. Callbacks are Oct 7, 12-3pm. This program meets Tu/Th 6-8:30pm and Sat 12:30-3pm. Performance Dates are Nov 16-18 at 7pm and Nov 18 at 2pm at the Virginia Theatre.
